PARENT HUB · SETTLING IN

A calm beginning,
one day at a time.

Separation is a new skill. Predictable routines and a short, confident goodbye help the child trust the new environment.

BEFORE THE FIRST DAY

Prepare without
creating pressure.

  1. One week before

Shift sleep and morning routines gradually. Speak simply and positively about school.

  2. The night before

Prepare the uniform and labelled bag together, then keep the evening calm and familiar.

  3. On the morning

Allow enough time for breakfast and dressing. Avoid adding promises or rewards that create more tension.

  4. At the classroom

Say one clear goodbye, name when you will return and allow the teacher to begin the transition.

WHAT HELPS

  • Keep drop-off language short and consistent.
  • Acknowledge feelings without suggesting school is unsafe.
  • Let the child carry one simple responsibility, such as their bottle.
  • Keep home routines stable during the first weeks.
  • Share useful information with the teacher privately.

WHAT MAKES IT HARDER

  • Leaving secretly without saying goodbye.
  • Returning repeatedly after the goodbye.
  • Comparing the child with siblings or classmates.
  • Asking many anxious questions immediately after collection.
  • Changing the plan every morning.

REMEMBER

Progress is not always linear.

A child may separate easily one day and need more reassurance the next. The goal is not “no tears”; it is growing trust, safety and independence. If a pattern continues, the family and teacher agree on a consistent plan together.
